The root is typically a non-green, underground, descending portion of the plant axis that gives rise to similar types of endogenous lateral branches and does not possess nodes and internodes. They are positively geotropic, positively hydrotropic, and negatively phototropic.

There are three types of root systems occurring in plants: tap root system, fibrous root system, and adventitious root system.

  • Fibrous Root System
1. It is formed in place of the tap root at the base of the main stem.

2. It is always underground.

3. Primary root is short lived. Instead underground root arise in groups from base of stem.

4. The main roots are equal length and give off small branches. Main roots and their branches are thin and thread like.

5.It is usually surface feeder

6. It is commonly found in monocots (Example: Wheat)

Difference between Fibrous Root System and Adventitious root system
  •  Adventitious root system

1.It may develop from any part of the plant other than radicle

2. It may be underground or aerial

3.Primary root is absent and it consists of roots forming a cluster.

4. The roots may be thick, thin or variously modified.

5. It is usually surface feeder.

6.It is found in dicotd and monocots.
