Difference Between the Himalayan and The Peninsular Rivers

 The snow - clad peaks and glaciers in the Himalayas are rich sources of fresh water.

Numerous great rivers take birth through the confluence of streams originating from the melting

snow. These rivers are known as Himalayan rivers. They are also enriched by the copious rain along the valleys. 

The major Himalayan rivers are Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra.

The rivers originating from the elevated regions of the peninsular plateau are known as peninsular rivers. As these are rain fed rivers, the water flow in these rivers decreases in summer.

Difference Between the Himalayan and The Peninsular Rivers 

Himalayan Rivers 

1. The himalayan rivers rise in the snow covered mountains and they flow throughout the year

2. The himalayn rivers flows in levelled Northern Plains.Therefore they are quite useful for navigation and irrigation. 

3.The himayan rivers bring with them fertile alluvium which they deposit in the Indo-Gangetic plains.

4. Canals have been dug to use the water of the rivers or irrigation.

5. Many important towns and centres of trade are situaited on the bank of the rivers.

6. The porous soil absorbs a lot of water which is later used as ground water by digging wellls and tube wells for domestic and irrigation puposes. 

The Peninsular Rivers 

1. The mountains in which the peninsular river rise are not snow covered. Hence they dry up in summer.

The peninsular rivers flow on uneven rocky surface. Therefore, they nether navigable nor useful for irrigation.

3. The peninsular rivers do not bring withthem enogh alluvium. As the current is swift, so the deposition activity is negligible.

4. As the terrain is rocky and the banks of these rivers are high, canals cannot be dug, However, dams are built to store the flood water for irrigation with the hlp of small channels. 

5. Very few important towns and centres of trade are situaited on the banks of the rivers.

6. The rocky soil does not absorb any water and hence no wells can be dug. All the water flows down in the sea at one and the same time.
