Detritivores: They are animals that feed on detritus. Detritivores ingest the organic matter. Ecologically, they cause pulverization or fragmentation of detritus.
Decomposers: They are microorganisms that obtain nourishment from organic remains. They are microorganisms that obtain nourishment from organic remains. They decompose the organic matter by secreting digestive enzymes over it. Ecologically, they cause humification and mineralization of organic matter.
Detritivores vs Decomposers
The fundamental difference between detritivores and decomposers lies in how they ingest and break down organic matter.
While both recycle nutrients in ecosystems by feeding on dead organic material (detritus), detritivores physically ingest solid matter and digest it internally, whereas decomposers release extracellular enzymes to chemically break down organic matter externally before absorbing nutrients.
